WHAT MAKES AN EXPEDITION?

Thinking of an expedition, thinking of an exotic place, thinking of going to some wilderness location. But is it an EXPEDITION?.

Come, listen and learn from Dave's lifetime of experiences. May be the British Canoe Union Expedition Committee can help with funding? However, they can only find EXPEDITIONS. Is yours an EXPEDITION or just another river trip?

DAVE MANBY

In 1976 I was the youngest member of the British Everest Canoe Expedition. Since then I have been continually exploring rivers around the world notably: 1978 Braldu river in Pakistan, 1982 Coruh River, Turkey, 1986 Middle and High Atlas mountains, Morocco, 1991 Indus River Pakistan, and finally 2001 Bakhtyaria River, Iran. For the last several years I have been the Chair of the BCU Expeditions Committee.

As the world contracts with the ease of air travel and the availability of better maps does this lessen an expedition or as the world expands because of this ease of travel and "Google Earth" does this increase the scope for the expeditioner as un-considered areas are revealed?

I will be speaking on what makes an expedition, when does a group of friends paddling a river cease to be a "trip" or "mission" and become an "expedition" and does this really matter!
